Plug and Play Selects First Cohort for Health-Tech Accelerator
Plug and Play has officially launched its new Cleveland health-tech accelerator and selected the accelerator’s first cohort of startup companies.  Plug and Play, an international startup accelerator based in Silicon Valley, opened the Cleveland location with help from local partners JumpStart Inc. and Cleveland Clinic.  The newly selected companies will spend time on the ground in Cleveland working out of the Global Center for Health Innovation and learning from local industry experts.
HTC Census Tracts Selected for “Opportunity Zone” Designation
The entire Health-Tech Corridor was included in Governor Kasich’s Opportunity Zone recommendations to the U.S. Treasury Department.  The new Opportunity Zone program aims to promote economic development by giving tax advantages to investors who invest in real estate projects and startup companies in designated areas.  The final details of the program are still under development by the Treasury Department.
Record Number of Cleveland Healthcare Startups Raise Growth Capital According to BioEnterprise Report
BioEnterprise’s recently released Midwest Healthcare Growth Capital Report shows a record number of Cleveland companies raised growth capital in 2017.  Although the overall amount of money invested in area companies has hovered around $200 million in recent years, 2017’s total of 62 companies raising capital was the most on record.
CWRU School of Medicine Networking Event Will Connect Companies to Researchers and Students
CWRU School of Medicine will hold a networking event on April 25th for local companies to learn about collaboration opportunities with the school’s faculty and students.  The Vice Dean of Research, Mark Chance, will discuss the School of Medicine’s innovation initiatives and give an update on the new health education campus that is currently under construction.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet some of the colleges most talented doctoral students and post-docs and learn about internship and fellowship opportunities.  Register
